"We are at war...." Remembering September 3, 1939, the day war broke out announced over the radio by King George V1: I was 7 at the time, living in Wallington, Surrey, a quiet suburban neighborhood, an hour's train ride to London. We were gathered around the radio listening to the King's sobering call to citizens of Britain and the Commonwealth in the fight for "... justice and peace against bondage and fear", that Hitler was already fermenting. In 1941 gas masks were issued in the belief that poisoned bombs would be dropped. We were trained in school in their use and, while wearing them, a children's story was begun, "Once upon a time...."
