WEEKEND REFLECTIONS: THINKING ABOUT SUMMER READING....

I am a mystery novel fan.  Currently, my favourite authors are:  1) Laurie R. King, the Mary Russell series in particular.  I am waiting for her latest novel, 'Garment of Shadows' due out in September.  2) Henning Mankell, the Kurt Wallander stories.  Alas, I feel I may have read the last one in the series but am hoping the author will keep Wallander busy for the time he has left to live. 'The Troubled Man'
is at Wallander's gloomy best, the personal details of his declining health giving as much interest as the story itself.   Neither novelist writes a simple detective story.  Both have invented detectives whose own lives are part of the story, to make wonderful and absorbing reading.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS: ROOFTOP FARMING IN GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN ....

The Eagle Street Rooftop Farm is difficult to find.  The Farm opens to visitors on Sundays - check the website HERE  (which doesn't tell you how to get there, but does tell you which Sundays are open).  It is at 44 Eagle Street, a converted industrial building about 3 stories up.  The climb entails walking across plastic matting placed upon a hot sticky tarred rooftop surface.  Me looking through a nearby reflection of the debris on the way up.

Take a walking stick - it is rough going in places....

Arriving along a very narrow walkway.   Today's project, to remove the ground cover in the foreground to plant peppers

Freshly picked salad greens can be purchased on the way out  - they are well worth the cost!  Crisper than the green market offerings, of course.

The prettiest rooster I have ever seen!  It is adopted.   He has two hens that lay light blue coloured eggs.   They are there to provide the fertilizer.

A volunteer conference!

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY: CURBSIDE GARDENS IN THE CITY FLOURISH FROM LOTS OF RAIN THESE DAYS...

For those who are fortunate enough to have a tree in front of their building, the area around it is seized for plantings that soften New York's concrete pavements in the summer.  It has become a matter of keeping-up-with-the-Jones's!
