RUBY TUESDAY: ADVERTISEMENT FOR A GOOD CAUSE....

A recent thunderstorm in NY City entrapped me in the CURE Thrift Shop (for Diabetes)
on 12th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues.

Towards the end of the storm I asked if they had an umbrella - they found this one, a delightfully
silky looking brolly by Estee Lauder, that I might not otherwise have bought, for $5!
'

It was raining hail stones the size of a dollar...
Since I was there for awhile, I also found this modern piece of sculpture, in tin to look like copper, for $10!

Whether or not it came from Hong Kong, I do not know.  In any case, I liked and bought it!

BLACK AND WHITE WEEKEND: A FAR CRY FROM THE WOMEN'S OLYMPIC BIKE RACE TODAY....

The women's Olympic bike race to Box Hill (and around it) is no picnic today - going through puddles, over slippery white lines and unexpected obstacles along the way - many accidents already....

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY 2: WOMENS OLYMPIC BIKE RACE THIS MORNING....

Watching the Olympic 4-hour bicycle event today - this event said to be the equivalent of bicycling from New York to Florida - (from London to, and around Box Hill, in Surrey), and bad weather rolling in on the horizon!  It is turning out to be quite a dangerous ride....

SKY WATCH FRIDAY: THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM....

Sweltering 100-degree temperatures were broken today when a dramatic freak storm swept over Manhattan bringing strong winds, heavy rain turning to quarter-size hail stones that bounced noisily off the tops of cars.  It was awesome!

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY: AN IRONIC COUPLING OF A FAMOUS PRINT AND A 'SCULPTURE' OF SORTS....

THIS PRINT OF A PAINTING AND THE ODD PLACEMENT OF THE BROKEN LIMBS BESIDE IT LEFT ME WONDERING IF THIS IS YET ANOTHER TAKE ON THE MEANING OF  'BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS' (1984), BY GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN, A PAINTING OF A FAMOUS PAINTING BY EDWARD HOPPER KNOWN AS 'NIGHTHAWKES' (1942).

SEEN AT THE DIABETES THRIFT STORE YESTERDAY, THE GOTTFRIED PRINT IDENTIFIES HUMPHREY BOGART, MARILYN MONROE, JAMES DEAN AND ELVIS AS THE BAR TENDER.  HOPPER'S PAINTING IS ABOUT LONELINESS;  GOTTFRIED'S PAINTING COMPOUNDS THE SENSE BY REPLACING HOPPER'S FIGURES WITH STARS KNOWN TO HAVE HAD TRAGIC FATES.

This local CURE THRIFT SHOP, 111 East 12th Street, NYC, 10003,  always offers interesting donated items for sale to benefit those living with diabetes.  This framed print, in very good condition, asking price $60, is a bargain for a collector of such iconic images.  Shop On Line here!
