MACRO MONDAY - ON IDENTIFYING FLOWERS - TWO BOOKS RECOMMENDED...

THIS IS A COMMON FLOWER AND I ONCE KNEW THE NAME OF IT.....

RECENTLY SEEN IN UNION SQUARE PARK -  it flowers after the white tobacco flower Nicotiana.    This one seems to like the same shady, sunlit, environment.    Does anyone know the name of it?

(Three books recommended:  1) Wild Flowers of America (1978) by Wasott & Platt, edited by H.W.Rickett - thanks to Lori at JARVIS HOUSE
                         2)  The Besler Florilegium by Gerard G. Aymonin)
                                                  3) Illinois Wildflowers by Don Kurz - thanks to BJ Roan

Another view...showing the leaves.

  1. I think it is some sort of anemone.....for the fall
but I may well be wrong.
    Some one will soon know.
I have never grown it -- but, like the Lenten Rose, it is subtle and lovely.

  2. Beautiful aren't they, one of our parks has them planted beside a small pond. It is a variety of anemone, I have also heard it called Japanese Windflower.

  7. It's very pretty and it does look like the Japanese anemone or windflower though they don't have clusters of flowers. Maybe it's related.

  8. It's a Japanese anemone for sure. I have some in my garden. :) There are many varieties of this perennial, some simple like this and some with many petals.

  9. Don't know the name, but have seen these. Lovely colors accentuated by the dark greenery. Nice touch to add book recommendations.
