MOTION THURSDAY - SLOW MOTION - "SUN AND MOON" by George Rickey

American Kinetic Sculptor, George Rickey, had a one-man exhibit in 1966 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC.  It was the largest mobile show I had ever seen, after Alexander Calder.  Rickey's work embodied huge sculptural pieces made in stainless steel that moved to the slightest air current.   See a 220 page catalogue, GEORGE RICKEY, by Nan Rosenthal (Abrams, NY. 1977) showing awesome, wonderful plates of his work.   (born 6.6.1907- died 7.17.2002)

This is a home-made copy of "SUN AND MOON" - one of his simpler designs.  This was made of wire and tinfoil.   It is the sunlight, the shadows, and the movement that enhances the meaning of this slow motion piece.  The original was made in stainless steel and brass and can be seen on page 85 of the catalogue.

SKYWATCH FRIDAY - REFLECTIONS OF TONIGHT'S SUNSET

Since my windows look to the East, I can only see the sunset in the windows facing West.

SKYWATCH FRIDAY - THE COLD SUNRISE

Today, Friday, at 7 am          Added today for those who wondered where the steam was coming from!

New Yorkers will not forget the day before, Wednesday, when overcast NYC waited for its
blizzard.  School was out, and some workers were given a snow day off.   By midday it had started in    earnest and by midnight it was over.  I believe we got less than was expected.   There was about 5 inches on top of cars in the lot.

Today, Thursday, the sky was clear and, between 7.10 and 7.25 am, this shapeless white light for
a sun rose, leaving a warmer looking skyline behind.   Nonetheless, it was still a very cold day, freezing
muddy looking, lumpy slush, if not quickly swept away by store front owners.

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY - THE UTILITIES

Today, roof top appliances on newer buildings are much more sophisticated to look at, but the older water boy, seen here as a shadow from another building, is still a familiar sight in NYC;   buildings still using oil burners are often required to add external smoke stacks, as seen to the right, and may only
emit smoke for a limited number of hours.
