Of all the utilities we have to use, the Water Tower is the most reliable for providing tap water when we need it. It is simply a large elevated tank of water atop all older buildings to provide water pressure. It is said to be the one utility that rarely breaks down. This is typically the shape found in NYC. In the suburbs they can be all shapes and sizes, one gigantic tank on stilts generally providing for one community.

Wonderful shadow shot.
ReplyDeleteThe old water tower hardly seems real in these days of city water. Yet this sits on top of an equally old buil ding, sitting tall and presumably collecting rainwater. The scene looks like apainting, and the old coexists with the modern glass and steel structures of today...
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful portrait of a time in history, a time when we conserved...I love it's organic beauty!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Easter Sunday!
Who was it painted 'haystacks'? I'm sure he'd have painted this if he'd seen it. But the slogan is possibly too American for me. Has it a meaning?
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful shot you found!
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter.

Isn't it wonderful to see some things preserved. Have a very happy Easter weekend.
ReplyDeleteLooks forbidding to me for some reason. Great photo though!
ReplyDeleteI saw a documentary about the people who erect and maintain these water towers in NYC. This is a great picture of one.
ReplyDeleteI agree, good shot. It should be noted that these are not relics that have been preserved but built, used and maintained currently in NYC. They contain city water and provide the necessary pressure to supply the floors below. I saw that documentary that Spadoman did... I seem to remember that the family that make and maintain them has been doing so for generations.
ReplyDeletean interesting post and super photo!
ReplyDeleteWow, old water towers like that are something that I really didn't imagine to see in NYC for some reason. I love the look of it! What an amazing photo! I hope you're enjoying your Easter long weekend :)
ReplyDeleteVery cool Shadow Shot. The old water tower stays most reliable. Also quite cool!
