WEEKEND REFLECTIONS - ON THE MISCONCEPTION OF THE TERM 'COMPUTER ART'...

This is not 'computer art' (or a photographic reproduction) for those still under the impression that an image that is created on the computer and printed out from an inkjet colour printer, is merely computer art!  The term suggests that the computer is dominant in the creation of art.  No way!  The artist or, the photographer seeking to produce fine art images, dominates.

The digital camera and the computer are the chosen tools of the artist, as is the brush chosen by the painter who wants to paint.  And the type of camera chosen by the photographer.

The image, once it leaves the camera, exists in the computer (or on a piece of 'paper', the canvas) and is often edited (more tools provided by the computer) to become something else - the work of art.   There are applications that can be used enabling the artist to directly sketch into the computer.  The digital photograph is inserted by way of ports.  The print out is the work of art, after editing.  The original stays in the computer which advantageously facilitates making 'editions' (documenting each work) and posting to other exhibition sites.

What you see here today are two 'reflection' photos that, at first, did not strike the photographer (me) as being that interesting in themselves.  However, when uploaded to the monitor and viewed through the prism of an eye for form, shape, colour, texture, then the two photos, rearranged, took on a different pattern that removed the mind's eye from what it was seeing before, to what it sees now.

If anyone can add to this refresher, feel free to comment!  My reflection for today.

MACRO MONDAY - A BUTTERFLY ON MY BACK...OR IS IT A MOTH?

This is a spontaneous photograph of a butterfly (or moth) that landed on my back as I was talking to Donna Lee Michas, Photographer and Street Artist, who exhibits her work in Union Square Park daily, except when it rains.    A passerby had spotted it and Donna promptly shot it for me for Macro Monday!    I am thrilled to be showing one of Donna's many brilliant photographs, this one framed an' all!  Http://f47.foliophotos.com

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS - A SYMPHONY OF REFLECTIONS ...

....IN CHELSEA,  NYC.    A NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL PLAYGROUND, vibrant with activity and noisy children, batting their balls and frisbies, accidentally, over high blue railings for passersby to retrieve - who are happy to be included, nonetheless.

21st Street is a busy, one-way street, and the cars reflect the energy, colours and sunshine of the day.....

We had been to see Claude Monet's last Water Lily paintings at the Gascoinge Gallery -
an exhibition of reflections to knock your socks off!

SKYWATCH FRIDAY - A most unusual sunset reflected...

...in the windows of this one new, very tall building,  standing alone - a new kid on the block - seen close to the river Hudson - its windows ablaze, facing west, as I look east.

For a moment all was bright and glittering, the rays highlighting the window frames, before the sun sank lower, returning the building back to its nondescript facade of bricks and mortar.  With thanks to fellow blogger Mary Westring for drawing my attention to this event when she was visiting.  Mary will be returning to her blog very soon, now that she is back from her trip to Japan.

RUBY TUESDAY - A RED LETTER DAY to PROTEST unfair discrimination ...

against some 300 NYC artist vendors who make a living selling their wares to
the hundreds of tourists who visit Manhattan to see the sights and sounds of
this fascinating city.   And Mayor Bloomberg wants to shrink their numbers to
81.  Here is the story,  according to the The Huffington Post:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/16/art-vendors-aught-in-blo_n_540935.html

And Donna Lee Michas is one of them - a well organized woman, indeed!

Donna is a Photographer and New York City Street Artist - http://fotografia47.my-expressions.com

Every day she is out there, in her allowed space (3'x8'x5'high) in Union Square Park, with her production of framed fine art objects, come rain or shine.   She keeps track of the weather portending rain because it takes her an hour or so to pack up her wares for transportation on her bike!

I see these vendors on a daily basis.   There are all kinds and some who could be picked up by any upscale gallery owner with an eye for talent.  Right now the prices are affordable.  Who knows which of them will be tomorrow's Star of the Fine Art World when the prices sky rocket.   But, one doesn't buy art necessarily for investment does one!    It is what YOU LIKE  today that counts.  And there are many other 'collectibles' being sold - old posters, pins and labels that make
great historical kinds of gift items for friends at home.    And contemporary innovations galore!

MOTION THURSDAY - HELLO? The classical curled-over tail of the curious cat...or, a spiritual inquiry between two cats...

This is Missy, the indoor house kitten, and Shadow, the homeless, outdoor cat.   Shadow is one of four other homeless cats that visit - the others are too frightened to make the signal, even after being fed.

A snippet from WHY CATS PAINT (1994), a theory of feline aesthetics. A book I found by chance at a used book store.  A wonderfully researched, serious and humorous study, illustrated. For more information go to  http://www.freddie-street.com/guide/wcpaint.shtml
